Little Mama’s Italian Is Coming to Lake Norman This Summer

If you’ve been making the drive from Cornelius or Huntersville into Charlotte just to get your Little Mama’s fix, that commute is almost over. Frank Scibelli is wrapping construction on the third location of Little Mama’s Italian, and it’s opening this summer at Lake Norman.

The new restaurant is going in at 9623 Bailey Road, Suite 100, in Cornelius, in a 4,300-square-foot space that formerly housed Goat Pizza. This is a substantial addition to the local dining scene and the most significant expansion of the concept since the Rea Farms location opened in South Charlotte in 2024.

Why Lake Norman Makes Sense

Little Mama’s has built a reputation in Charlotte that’s hard to manufacture: it’s genuinely beloved. The original SouthPark location developed a loyal following almost immediately after opening in 2020, and the Rea Farms location has continued that trajectory. The concept draws the kind of regulars who don’t need a special occasion to come back; they just want a bowl of fresh pasta, a good cocktail, and a table that feels like somebody’s dining room.

The Lake Norman market has been growing steadily for years. Cornelius, Davidson, and Huntersville have welcomed significant residential growth, and the dining scene has been working to keep up. An Italian restaurant built around scratch cooking and real hospitality fits that community in a way that’s been missing.

What to Expect

If you haven’t been to Little Mama’s before, the concept is worth understanding. This isn’t a red-and-white-checkered Italian-American chain. It’s inspired by the neighborhood restaurants of New England in the 1960s and 70s—the places Scibelli grew up going to as a kid in Springfield, Massachusetts: unpretentious, warm, and genuinely good.

The menu is built around the things that actually matter. Fresh pasta made in-house. A mozzarella bar where the mozz is made on-site and paired with accompaniments that rotate with the season. Classic dishes executed carefully: chicken parm, eggplant, broiled steak—the kind of food that tastes like someone in the kitchen put real effort into it, because they did. And a full bar with cocktails that don’t feel like an afterthought.

The 4,300-square-foot Cornelius space will give the restaurant room to breathe in a way that feels right for a neighborhood this size. 140 seats is generous without being overwhelming, which is exactly the scale that works for the kind of restaurant Little Mama’s is trying to be.

The Story Behind the Concept

Little Mama’s didn’t come out of nowhere. It grew out of Mama Ricotta’s, the Italian institution on Kings Drive in Midtown Charlotte that Scibelli opened in 1992, making it one of the longest-running restaurants in the city. Mama Ricotta’s is where the classic, full-service Italian experience lives in Charlotte. Little Mama’s is the more casual, neighborhood version of that same sensibility, inspired by the kinds of Italian-American restaurants that felt less like a destination and more like somewhere you just went.

Scibelli has described Little Mama’s as getting back to his roots: simpler, more personal, and very much connected to the food he grew up eating. That specificity is part of what makes the concept work. You can feel the point of view in the room.

Stay in the Loop

The official opening date will be announced as construction wraps up this summer. The best way to stay updated is to follow Little Mama’s on social media and keep an eye on the Little Mama’s website for announcements.

If you want a preview of what’s coming before the doors open on Bailey Road, both the SouthPark and Rea Farms locations are open now. Start with the fresh mozzarella bar and go from there. By the time the Cornelius location opens, you’ll already know what you’re ordering.
